TP16: Turkish İskender kebab by Hünkar

|

Hünkar, named after the Ottoman Turkish word for sovereign of sultan (the traditional institution specializes in typical Ottoman-Turkish cuisine), is a notable restaurant in Istanbul, Turkey, founded in 1950 in Fatih. The restaurants are owned and run by restaurateurs Talip Ügümü and his three sons- Feridun, Galip and Faruk. In 2007, Hünkar was chosen 99th of the world's top 100 restaurants by the British Magazine Restaurant.
Its branch at the Green Bursa, next to Yesil Camii or the famous Green Masjid has a wonderful location overlooking the Bursa valley, which makes up for the tourist-trap prices. We had a three-course lunch, started with their tomato soup accompanied with salad and other typical Turkish starter set, followed by the main dish – the İskender kebab and concluded with the Turkish delight desserts - the popular candied chestnut. However, M Aiman and Afiqah tried the Hünkar pizzas. The foods were scrumptiously superb! The atmosphere, the services and other facilities were remarkably commendable. Well, that was what you paid. Its specialty was however, "Hünkar Beğendi" literally means ‘admired by the sultan’, a traditional dish prepared of crunchy lamb on a bed of mashed eggplants.
İskender kebab is one of the most famous meat foods of Northwestern Turkey and takes its name from its inventor, İskender Efendi, who lived in Bursa in the late 19th century. It is a kind of kebab prepared from thinly cut-grilled lamb or beef basted with tomato sauce over pieces of pita bread and generously slathered with melted butter and yogurt. Additionally, one cylindrical meatball can be placed on top. It is commonly consumed with şıra as a drink to aid digestion. Tomato sauce and boiling butter are sometimes poured over the dish, at the table.
