Tanoura along the Nile

|

I took these photos during our dinner at the Nile Maxim, one of the many exclusive ‘floating’ restaurants cruised the Nile River in Cairo. One will be entertained by the local entertainers with local songs and dance while dining.
One of the favorites is the Tanoura – whirling dervish dance. Tanoura is said to be originated from Turkey – the Turkish Sema, which was later inherited by the Fatimids, who actually introduced it to Egypt. The Sema dance is a sacred Sufi practice of whirling or meditative spinning which included music and religious chanting or zikr.
The whirling dervish – Tanoura – evolved through the centuries in Egypt and became one of the most well-known and entertaining folkloric dances in the country.
