TP11: Taksim

|

As the saying goes, ‘Curiosity kills the cat’, honestly, we went to Taksim was merely out of our curiosity – friends said this is a good place for shopping and happening. Well, our main objective was not shopping though, nevertheless, talking about Taksim, the district is hyped and famed for its high-end restaurants, modern 5-Star hotels, shopping complex with all world class branded items, and other touristic leisure spots.
There were hundreds if not thousands of pigeons near the Square. To enjoy the thrill of being ‘attacked’ by the gorgeous friendly pigeons, one must serve them their foods, which are abundantly available from the local peddlers.
Historically, Taksim literally means in Arabic ‘division’ or ‘distribution’, and Taksim square was originally the meeting point of the main water lines from the north of Istanbul and branched off to other parts of the city, hence the name. It was established by Sultan Mahmud I.
Except the shopping malls and the nostalgic tram ran from the square along the Istiklal Caddesi or Independence Street, there was nothing much to see at this place. In the morning television news, it was reported that thousands of people ushering the new 2010 eve crowded the district. Luckily we did not visit here last night.
We went back by tram to Kabatas. From Kabatas we took another tram to Sultanahmet station. It cost us 1.5 TL each for one sector. Actually, moving around Istanbul by the tram was the best mode other than our original foot. It was indeed, efficient and relatively cheap.
