28.4.2011::the beginning of their 2weeks break

After almost 5 months away from their brothers - M Asri & M Aiman and little sis - Afiqah, Bintulu Airport witnessed their excitement when Afi and M Afiq exit the arrival lounge around 18:25 hours. Except M Asri, M Aiman and Afiqah waited impatiently but zealously for their big brothers at the arrival hall.

5th TOUR of DUTY

On February 6, 2011, AirAsia flight no. AK5164 witnessed the transition of the 5th chapter of my life or rather the 5th point of my Tour-Of-Duty. At 16:20 hours sharp, the Malaysian pioneer of a low cost flight service popular known for its catchy tag-line “Now Everyone Can Fly”, bridged my special assignment from the 2nd world largest LNG Complex to the unchallengeable world tallest twin tower. It was really a mixed feeling: as an imperfect human being, the sense of pride aroused when I was called to carry out a special assignment at the Executive Vice President office of the Malaysian Oil & Gas Giant – one of the Fortune 400 companies, but on the other hand, facing new challenges within the hectic and demanding KL’s life is going to be a strenuous episode of my life. One has to be disciplined and always at constant speed to catch up with the arduous laborious lifestyle of any big developed city, such as KL. Well, what choice do I have? Either you eject yourself out from the system or join it. I was not given a chance to exercise my right; I mean to allow me to wisely think before suggesting any decision. Again, who am I to do so? May Allah swt give me strength, determination and health to persevere the 5th chapter of my life.

Part of Taman Ikhlas Sg Long from the second floor of Lot 18 - our house. When we arrived back from Egypt on 3.9.2010, it was a very scenic view that refreshed and cooled our eyes. There were trees, birds singing in-sync with insects harmonizing the ambience of our back lane. It was very refreshing and enriching. Within 67 days, however, the picture was turned around by the future development of human basic needs – accommodation. My neighbor, Mr. Tan told me, the trees and the nearby eco-system were grounded to give way for another high-end housing estate. Reading and looking at it from the positive perspective, the spinning effect of the project will give impact the value of our property. Personally I think now, as the population increase, the demand for property is proportionately high, hence the essentiality in opening more areas. Thus, cutting of trees and trimming up hills cannot be avoided, but what is more important, the Developer must be responsible for the changes of the eco-system. The Government and any related authorities must make sure that all parties comply with the existing Laws, Acts, Rules and Guidelines.
6 years ago, the idea of procuring the Lot 18, was to have fresh greenery surrounding far away from the bustle and hustle of the city cry. Well, that’s life.

Packing time - to start our new chapter of our journey

Life must go on. Moving to our 3rd phase of our journey, we decided to pack and mobilize some of our essential things from our Lot 18 Taman Ikhlas, Sg. Long to Lot 6193 Taman Greenville, Senadin. Our plan and thinking is to settle down in Miri. It was Friday – 19.11.2010, the Forwarder cum Packer - Subalipak’s crew arrived on time @09:30 am. There were only two of them – Saiful and Nasser. The speed was not to my expectation, but after my mild argument with the Management, more crew joined them and finally, at around 16:56 hours, the final box number 64 was mobilized to their lorry.

One of the exclusive and my favorite items, the Burmese Teak Dining table was properly nicely wrapped and packed. The table (for six pax) cost me about RM 7,000 that I’ve bought from the Rainforest, One Utama.

Alhamdullillah – praise only for Allah swt, with the wealth and health granted and blessed by Him, I received my new machine 2.0 VTi-L from Heng Ho Hing Miri today @ 15:25 hours. It is not a good investing channel though, but to conform to the current requirement, it is actually a necessity. Once again, praise only for Allah – Alhamdullillah and Thanks to HIM.

Time flies......! Really? Or it is just psychological impact versus the environment around us? Or it was just the consequence of our poor time management, which we always tried to deny simply because of our ego?

Well, as much as we all knows, Allah swt gives twenty-four hours a day, no more and no less, to all of us irrespective who you are and what you do.

As for me, the Time is ticking and obediently ticking....but the official letter is still pending

Terima kasih Allah kerana menjinakkan hati dan memulihkan pemikiran ku dengan sinar iman dan nur ilmu. Aku terharu, aku pilu, aku silu, aku terkedu dengan apa yang berlaku, namun, aku percaya masih ada sinar menyinari hidupku dari Allah Yang Satu.

KL from the window of 2908 - Mandarin Oriental

I arrived at one of my favorites hotel – the Mandarin Oriental around 23:25 hours. Not what I have expected. I took an Express Railway Link or ERL that was supposedly an express 28 minutes ride from KLIA to KL Central. However, it turned out to be a non express service with 4 stops that caused us about 10 minutes delay! For the same amount of money that you have paid, it was a little bit frustrated. Well, that’s life. What options did I have during that particular time? Nevertheless, the check-in process was very smooth. Upon my arrival at the reception or the front desk, the receptionist – a young Chinese lady (can’t recall her name) greeted me; “Welcome to Mandarin Oriental Sir….Can I help you Sir?” I gave her my passport and reciprocated; “Thank you..yes, please…I would like to check-in.” she took my passport and at the same time out of her courtesy, she politely asked me; “how was your trip, Sir?” “Well, it was a long hectic trip…..but what to do though” I responded with my somber mood. “Yes, Mr. Hj Joll, you will be staying here for two nights and would you prefer smoking or a non smoking room?” She excitingly addressed me by name but courteously reaffirmed my booking. “Nope, I’ve got no preference….thank you” I confirmed my requirement. She took merely 5 minutes and handed over the card key to me; “here is you room key Sir, have a nice day” she kindly closed the conversation, in which I responded;”That was fast…great, thank you”. Near to KLCC and their distinctive services are the two main reasons I put myself here when I am on business trip. Very convenient!
I woke up for my Fajr prayer around 06:05 hours and continued my nap again. The last time I stayed in this hotel was July 2009. Within that short span of time, I would say, there were a lot of changes and development going on around KL. Right in front of the Mandarin Oriental for instance – the view from 2908, 10 months ago, the Developer was still struggling with the ground floor or the lower level of the exclusive condominium. Now, it was up and occupied by millionaire club members and societies. The garden or landscape in front of the hotel has been removed to give way for another project – the underground tunnel and one of the concierges said, for underground shopping complex. Whether his claim was true or not, the fact is that, construction is going on aggressively. The view of KL’s skyline and its inhabitants from this room was amazing and impressive. It reflected the strength and the attitude of the people economically, etc.
KL is always an interesting place to visit. InsyaAllah, God willing, my next tour of duty will be probably based in KL or to be specific the PETRONAS Twin Tower (PETH). Honestly, this is not really my preference. But, as long as I would like to stay with the current Employer, I will commit myself to their policy, business needs and requirements. In my opinion, complying with the companies’ rules is part of the ibadah if you understand the fundamentals of the Islamic teaching well. One needs to put their best efforts, honest and sincerely for Allah swt in anything that he does in this world. What really important is the Almighty Allah Rabbul Jalil’s Blessing, Grace and Mercy. O Allah, please place us at the right place which You think is better for us. Aamiin.

after the Long Hiatus

Last time I went back to Malaysia was in July 2009, but due to the economic down turn and recessions that hit, wiped and smashed all business sectors and organizations globally, May 1 was the first business trip to Malaysia that I had since May 2009. Sherif sent me to the Al Nouzha Airport at 18:18 hours. I did not ask for ‘Meet and Assist’ (M&A), but, Mohamed Mostafa of PICL E’s Admin was very proactive enough in arranging one. Somehow, there was miscommunication between them! Basem, the M&A representative was waiting for me at the arrival lounge because he thought that I am arriving from Doha. Anyway, the check-in and the immigration process was very smooth, partly due to less passengers. There were only four including me in the First Class cabin though, hence the focused attention and pampering by the cabin crew.
I was actually not feeling well that day – mainly caused by the abdominal upset. Well, Alhamdulillah, Allah swt with His Grace and Mercy had given me mental strength to overcome the situation. At 19:37 hours, we performed the congregation prayer of Maghrib and ‘Isya at the departure lounge despite the boarding call. Well, we knew it very well….this is Egypt. We were ushered to another bus which was similar in nature. No comments!
My thought was wrong; my past experience flying Qatar Airways from Alexandria to Doha was horrible! I mean to be fair to them, the plane itself. The service, however, was excellent. But now, their effort in face-lifting the asset is commendable. The seats were more comfortable and spacious.
To cut that boring part short; we finally arrived ahead of the scheduled time by 15 minutes. The taxing, however, dragged us a little bit. Anyway, we arrived at the Premium Lounge at 23:35 hours. One of the ground crew (a Nepalese I think?!) as usual doing their routine, kindly stopped me, politely requested for my boarding pass, glanced through it for about 20 seconds (at the boarding pass off course!) and ushered me to the transfer counter. While leading me to the counter, she told me; “Sir, since your transit time is more than 6 hours at night, you are entitled to check-in at our hotel – all on Qatar Airway’s account.” I thanked her. I did not expect that arrangement. A day before that, well, in fact that morning, our Administration Executive, Sameh Said, had put his best efforts liaising with Qatar Airways through our travel agent – Astra Travel in Cairo on that matter. They failed! I mean we were informed that, the Airline does not provide that kind arrangement!
She contacted her colleague at another counter and called the COBUS Driver to send me to the transfer terminal. There were relatively many people obediently waited their turn in the queue. Anyway, due to the efficiency of the service and perhaps the high level of competencies of the staff, we were ushered to the hotel – Movenpick Tower and Suite, Doha’s Coaster within 40 minutes. We finally arrived at the hotel after 15 minutes drive along the coast line of the Gulf. That was it! Oops…by the way, we were provided with Dinner and free refreshment – only soft drink and fresh juices please!. Thanks Qatar Airway.

Another 'Afi's Breakthrough

Alhamdullillah…Congratulations ….Alf Mabrouk to ‘Afi for another breakthrough in his art work. He received for the second time from Mr. Hindley, the Principle of the British School of Alexandria the highest award of Art Work 2008-2009. The first Malaysian who won the award from the school. This achievement has casted another milestone of the first phase of his journey.
With the certificate and voucher, he gave us his award winning gorgeous smile. He deserved it.
On his left is his classmate, Fouad El Naga another genius who received the Top As Level scorer and Sheriff El Naga who received the best Physics Award 2008-2009.
During the light refreshment, Afiqah, his beloved smart sister accompanied him for the food and drinks.

The Long and Winding road.........

This part of my life is called ACHIEVEMENT. Let e bring you back 34 years back to a small city called Kuching - literally means Cat, situated in the western tip of Sarawak. The story begins:

1974 – My respectful father Hj Joll Drahman passed away at the age of 56 when I was 9 years old.
1976 – About 2 years later my beloved mother Zaiton Sebol joined my late father, departed this transitory world at her age of 38 when I was in Primary 6, left me and my step brother alone. The day when I felt really distraught, was the worst horrible day in my entire life – I lost someone that I really love - someone who will never and cannot be replaced by anyone else. Cried the whole day long and asked from the Al-Mighty Allah swt who will take care of us?!. 7 Days later, my adopted family flown from Miri invited us staying with them.
1977 – New Life with adopted family. I really missed mom so much.
1978 – Not easy life though and started to worry about school, examination fees, etc.
1979 – Lower secondary. Among the top 3 Malays passed the Lower Certificate of Education (LCE) examination and subsequently, selected to Science stream in the same school.

1980 – Met new friends and teachers. It was my new world and enjoyed the class very much. Family life improved.
1981 – Proud for being top 10 (only 2 Malays) students passed Malaysian Certificate of Education (MCE). I was offered by ITM, USM and UTM to pursue my studies in their universities. Despite my poverty and without any counseling & guidance, I pursued my Petroleum & Gas engineering at UTM.
1982 – Excited and felt more financially secured when successfully passed through Sarawak Shell Bhd. scholarship scheme.
1986 – Graduated from UTM. Mixed feeling – how I wished my parents were around during the auspicious occasion. I went to Pakistan, India, Bangladesh & Thailand enhancing my inner strength and faith. I hope and pray my sacrifice and effort will be accepted by Allah swt. Aamiin. After completed the rounds I returned back to Malaysia during the economic recession. Couldn’t find any jobs!1987 – Went to several interviews with PETRONAS, Shell, Schlumberger, etc. No Job! Hence, I turned to burgers & sweet-corn entrepreneur, street-freelance portrait artist, etc.

1987 – First working experience: Project Engineer with Samabakti Engineering. Learnt and gained priceless experience/knowledge from the CEO, En Norudin Tuah. I was an inexperience 22 years old fresh graduate being entrusted to lead about 19 experienced workforces was really a tough job. Made a lot of mistakes, wrestled with sub-contractors and get screwed by the client. Ultimately, I was bombarded by my Project Director. But, that was how I discovered my strength and potential as a team leader. Remember when one nice day, En Norudin brought me to his office and lectured me on what is business. Among others, he said; “to be successful in business you must have a good discipline, perseverance, endurance and know the game. And, to open a business, capital is secondary and what primary is networking and understanding others”. I will remember this line forever. Academically, En Norudin was just an average person, but his attitude toward success, discipline, honest and visionary-farsighted has made him a successful leader. However, I was only 6 months with the company.
1988 – Sarawak Shell called to join their Sabah team as a Junior Geologist. Interesting job but somehow I didn’t like the routine so much. Employed by Shell during the downturn was considered very lucky then. Experienced and learnt new different set of things: Information Technology; presentation; professionals & hard working group of people – working life within Shell environment was very tough; budget and all administrative matters
1989 – Received telegram from PETRONAS in February to report duty at ABF, Bintulu. Good offer and package! I was very indecisive though. Hence, I consulted family and friends for decision. Finally, albeit permanent package in Sarawak Shell and family pressure - pulling factor, decided to join PETRONAS – it is time to be more independent and adventures. With mixed feeling I resumed duty on the 14th of April at ABF. Excited – met old and new friends. My first assignment was to Urea plant Operations team. Learnt from ‘point zero’, independently without proper coach and guidance. Life was very interesting though.
1990 – Late December was a very memorable moment in my life: Saiful & Narimah was solemnized as husband & wife – ended my naughty single status title.
1991 – Mid October, our first baby joint our family poured us with joy. On the other hand, he brought us new responsibilities and challenges. Hence, the second son joint us right on the same Mid October 1992.
1994 – The first ever ABF QCC – the Q7 won the regional QCC convention organized by NPC. QCC was one of the main activities that ABF initiated as part of teambuilding strategy since they embarked with TQM. I was one of the facilitator entrusted and managed to bring up one of the Operations shift crew to be at par with other veterans then.
1995 – The pH7 marked another milestone when they won gold in the National QCC convention. The team really deserved the gold: they were very dedicated, creative, committed and cooperative-has high team spirit. In one way or another, the pH7 has made me realized my potential and leadership capabilities. Thank you pH7…!!
1996 – The pH7 was invited to present their project in the International QCC convention in Japan. On the same year, I was identified and selected to Supervisory Development Program organized by ABF in collaboration with NEBSM.1997 – Completed SDP and awarded Top Student & Best project. I made another move in my career path: appointed and promoted to Shift Superintendent after completing 6 months training at Ammonia and Utilities plants. Bigger roles and responsibilities which challenged my leadership capabilities - gained and learnt more experience and knowledge/skills. I took it as recognition! Another exciting aspect which has enhanced my leadership was when group of us graduated as facilitator of Teambuilding – certified to organize and facilitate teambuilding within ABF. Successfully conducted the first ever teambuilding series for all ABF staff.
1998 – A little bit disappointed when the Management decided to delimit Shift Superintendent Position and move 4 of us on rotational basis to HR, Logistic, so on and so forth. The GM, En Kamaruddin Zakaria and the HR Manager then, managed to convince us. I was transferred to HR – Personnel and Employee Relations Section. Again, have to start from scratch to pick-up all the HR subject. This was another round of my learning curve – thanks to the Management of ABF for giving me the opportunity. Indeed, the experience that I gained was an eye opener and really enhanced my paradigm. Somehow or rather, after a while, I felt in love with HR…… it was love at first sight! I had a good coach (I mean Manager), Tn Hj Shafiee and obviously the whole HR team who had given me full cooperation and guidance without any hesitant, etc. One of the challenged I took from him was the new approach and concept of ABF Family Day – first of its kind in Bintulu then. On the same year, I was selected as KL Commonwealth game 1998 volunteers by the Government of Malaysia and was appointed as a Supervisor to a small team of volunteers for the hockey stadium. Honestly, hockey was never my game though albeit my appeal to other areas likes athletics or gymnasium.
1999 – Early of the year, with the new Management, we were called back to the plant. As for me, the call was a very severe disappointment in my career path whilst in ABF. Our house was intruded and some jewelry was stolen. Introduced and initiated ABF Neighborhood Watch (ANW) blessed by the ABF Management and successfully brought back the culprit to the police custody a month after that.
1999 – 3rd quarter of the year, another ‘bull’s run’ phase when the Management offered me to fill up HR Planning section. It was another round of learning curve and though life – new subject and set of people. However, I was very passionate with the tasks and ultimately motivated.
2000 – Felt recognized when the Management entrusted me to cover HRM Manager’s position when the incumbent resigned. Despite my ‘handicap’, took it as a challenge and tried my very best.
Cycling is always my hobby: Bought new bike GT 3000. Formed ABF Cycling Club (ACC) and organized ‘a lifetime cycling experience’ to Miri – 230 km ride through 194 hills within 13:36 hours with 2 main stop. Exhausted, thrilled but cooled off when we were welcomed by VIPs in Miri.
2001 – The most delighted and happiest year of my personal life and working world!: 2 weeks after we welcomed our fifth child – a cute little baby girl (the only girl out of 5), Lembaga Tabung Hajji called and invited me to perform Hajj – a journey of a lifetime. Whilst in Mecca, received news that the Management had agreed and decided to promote and transfer to lead a Quality department at PETRONAS Ammonia SB (PASB). Alhamdullillah, Zillion of thanks to the Al-Mighty Allah swt. Once again, relearned and learning process. However, the game was entirely different: new young generation, different culture, new environment and new challenges. I must record my sincere appreciation and thanks to En Anuar Ismail who was the CEO and En Adnan Zainal Abidin, the GM then, who was eventually, took over the button from En Anuar Ismail. Both of them, a great coach, inspired us with a different dimension on business strategy and philosophy. Learnt a great deal from them on the art of negotiation.

2003 – Managed to convince the Management to participate in Prime Minister Quality Award (PMQA) and PASB was short listed as the top 10 finalist.
2004 – PASB participated for the second time in the PMQA but, we were very frustrated because PASB did not make it to the top. However, felt relieved when PASB was announced the winner for NPC Productivity Award.
2006 – At last, PASB made it to the top! However, the announcement was made when I was no more with the company. Very proud though.
2006 – Another positive spike! Living abroad and working in a join venture environment is ultimately not an easy life situation. Working abroad has always been my dream and with mainly two things in mind; new challenges and exposure to my family, I was very delighted and accepted the offer – leading A Quality team and looking after HR system at Egyptian LNG. The move was indeed a big jump of my leadership journey. Thank you to my family, PETRONAS and most of all to the Almighty Allah swt.

Graduation: Managing Development Programme

'Ade Kelas Beb' - literally it means we have the class.The team Ade Kelas Beb (AKB) was formed on the 11th of April 2005 at PERMATA. It comprises of five managers from PETRONAS GAS Berhad (PGB), Ethlene PolyEthlene Malaysia Sdn Bhd (EPEMSB) and PETRONAS Ammonia Sdn Bhd (PASB). Five of them namely:
- ‘Adros M Appandi a Material Service Manager at PASB and has been with PETRONAS for 18 years
- M Harus B Wagirin an Operation Utility Manager has been with PETRONAS Gas Bhd for the last 25 years
- A Rahman B Bistamam an Engineering Maintenance Manager at PGB, has been with PETRONAS for the past 22 years
- Nasruddin B M Zain a Sales Manager at EPEMSB, has been with PETRONAS for 22 years
- Saiful Anuar B Hj Joll an Organizational Improvement Manager at PASB and has been with PETRONAS for the last 16 years.

The basis of the formation is basically the geographical aspect, where all the members except Nasruddin are based at Kertih, Terengganu. Nasruddin however, is frequently available at Kertih due to his business requirement. This aspect is quite significant for the smooth progress and momentum of the team operation. Consequently, it reduced the traveling expenditure of the team members.
Lead by Saiful Anuar who was unanimously appointed by other members, the team called itself ade kelas beb. Literally it means it has class! The consideration to use the name is simply it is in line with their project theme in identifying a world class characteristics and elements. And, another aspect of it, the name is kind of a motivation factor to the members itself. Alhamdullillah, the AKB was awarded The Best Overall Project and I personally won the Best Project Award and the Best Student Award.
