Today is the 1st day of the first month of the Muslim Calendar, Muharram 1431 Hijjri. The Hijrah or emigration marked the first year where the great Prophet of Allah, Muhammad saw (peace be upon him), and his Companion Abu Bakar as Siddiq radiallah hu ajmain, were asked by Allah swt to leave Makkah for Madinatul Munawarrah. The designation of the first year of the Islamic calendar was made by Saidina Umar radiallah hu anhu (ra). This emigration happened on the 8th of Rabiul Awal 1 hijjri or 20th September 622, which is about 66 days after the first day of Muharram. Many writers confuse the first day of the year of the Hijrah with the Hijrah itself, erroneously stating that the Hijrah occurred on 1 Muharram AH 1 or 16 July 622.
Technically, the first Hijrah occurred in 615 when a group of Muslims was counseled by Prophet Muhammad saw to escape persecution in Makkah and travel to the Kingdom of Axum, which was ruled by a Christian king. The great Prophet himself did not join this emigration. In that year, his followers fled Makkah's leading tribe, the Qurash, who sent emissaries to Axum to bring them back to Arabia. The nascent movement faced growing opposition and persecution.
Hijrah is a step towards success. And, success has to come with sacrifices.
To all our brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, relatives, and all our Muslims friends, we wish you happy new 1431 Hijjri year. May Allah swt give you all His Blessings in any good things that you do. The true success is when you subscribe yourselves to Allah swts’ rules as shown by His Prophet Muhammad saw (peace be upon him).
