Rasullullah saw (peace be upon him) said; ‘Those who serve or prepare food for someone who is fasting for his iftar will get the same tsawab of the person who was fasting’.
May Allah swt give His Blessing to Yehia and his family for preparing the scrumptious dishes – roasted turkey; Masaa’ – eggplant cooked with beef, tomato and other spicy stuff; fateer lahmah or beef puff; dessert – khunafa bi Mangga and other Egyptians cuisine. It was indeed marvelous.

The Real Sense of Merdeka

This year, Malaysia Independence Day coincides with the holy month of Ramadan. The month that has great significance to Muslim world, where eligible Muslims are obligatory to perform the third tenets of Islam – fasting. Fasting is in a way to purify the faith and a simulation process to fight one of the abstract but tough ‘enemies’ of human kind – the desire. More than 1420 years ago, the great Messenger of Allah swt, Prophet Muhammad saw (peace be upon him) and his 312 companions had won the battle of Badr during the month of Ramadan, to be specific - Tuesday (based on the Gregorian-Hijri convertor) or Friday (as what most scholars claimed) the 17th of Ramadan 2 Hijjri or 13th March 624 AD. They won the battle with pride albeit their humble ‘artilleries’ of broken swords and few horses. Western historians, who can think only in terms of material causes and affects, are left wondering how a body of three hundred footmen could vanquish one thousand adversaries reinforced with a hundred horse. But Divine help has many a time worked wonders like. However, yet, after the battle when they were on the way back to Mecca, Rasullullah saw (peace be upon him) said to his Companions; ‘..we had just won a small battle, the real bigger battle is to fight against our own desire’.
Philosophically, learning from the hadith, we should look at independent from a broader perspective. Yes, our beloved Malaysia has achieved its independence and gained the sovereignty from the British 52 years ago, but are we as an individual – the citizen of this beautiful country, Malaysia have achieved the absolute freedom from other colonies? The role of each individual is very important for the development of any nations. No nation shall exist without community and community is formed when there are groups of individual working and living together harmoniously. And, in each individual there is a small ‘flesh’ that determined the goodness of each individual. Apart from that, each normal individual has five senses that could be easily influence by the environment, be it good or bad.
Now, let me ask these questions; is our mind free from the colonization of laziness, stubbornness, thinking of doing any uncivilized things, etc.? Have we freed ourselves from the common illness of humankind called jealousy, greed, selfish, egocentrisms, hypocrisies, etc.? Sit back and self reflex what and where we are now. Happy 52nd Independent Day to all Malaysians wherever there are.
After 2 Months and 2 days
We used to hear this famous two words ‘time flies’, aren’t we? To me and in fact, time is a constant factor; Allah swt has given us a fix 24 hours a day, no less and no more! Like wise, Allah swt has given us life, it is thus, us to manage our life and time in accordance to what He had revealed us through the holy Quran nul Kareem as demonstrated by His Messengers.
Henceforth, in the next more or less 8 months to come, ‘Afi is going to sit in his IGCSE ‘A’ Level examination and Muhammad Afiq with his IGCSE ‘As’ Level examination; Muhammad Asri now, is in Year 10, Muhammad Aiman is in Year 6 and Afiqah is now in Year 4.
All the best, kids. As I always shared and reminded you all, what matters to me, is the efforts and attitudes towards achieving any goal, not the number of ‘A’. And, above, do it sincerely for Allah Rabbul jalil.

Ramadan Kareem
Today, is the first day of the holy month of Ramadan 1430 Hijjri. This year, many countries in the world, observe the first day of Ramadan on the 22 August. In Egypt, weeks before the Ramadan, people were busy gearing themselves in the welcoming of the most awaited month. Besides shopping for all the necessary items, they were busy decorating their streets and house with lights, feinouz and other decorative materials. To them, Ramadan is very special religiously and culturally.
For us, this is our third Ramadan in this beautiful land of Egypt. May Allah swt give us His blessing for us to perform this third tenet of Islam smoothly as shown by His Messenger the prophet Muhammad saw (peace be upon him).
To our families, relatives and friends wherever they are, please accept our apologies for our shortcomings and may this Ramadan shall be the best ever in our life. Kul ‘am wa antum bil Khair. Ramadan Kareem.

I like this Man
I like this man, period! He has placed Malaysia to the hearts and minds of many people globally.
Below is the excerpt of his speech during the ninth convocation of PETRONAS University of Technology on 16 August 2009. The inspiring speech of the Chancellor, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed:
"Now you are going to face life as real people. No longer looking towards your parents for sustenance but you have to work for yourselves now. But even if you work for yourselves I am quite sure you will always remember the people that you owe your success to. Your parents firstly, the university and the members of the academic staff, but more generally to the society in general because without a society that is peaceful and progressive, that is fairly well-developed, there wouldn't be this opportunity for you to study at a prestigious university like Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. So while you are glad that you have got through, you must never forget that you owe an obligation, to all these people; society in general, your parents, and of course, the university. Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS I think, is well on the way to becoming the best university in Malaysia. But that will depend on a lot of things. Of course the university itself will strive to provide the best education possible for the students coming to this university. But the students themselves have to work in order to make this university better known and highly respected. There are some universities in the UK for example which has become very well-known because of the way they speak. We talk about the Oxford accent. I am not proposing that you have a PETRONAS accent. But I would certainly suggest that when you leave the university and you work, you will show a certain character that will always be associated with the graduates of this university. What are the things that you can do?You must be, not only people with knowledge, but also with upright character. You will be people who always strive for the best and you will always try to contribute as much as possible to whatever organization that you work in. You should show the highest quality in terms of honour and responsibility. If you do all these things; all the graduates from this university put their minds to achieving these things, it will not be reflected only on you but it will be reflected also to the university so that the university will become a university which produces the best graduates not only in terms of their acquiring knowledge but also in terms of their character, their behaviour, their willingness to work hard and above all in whatever endeavour they enter into, they will be successful. Then, people will recognize you and people will go around and say, "Well, he is from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS". That would mean that we have succeeded in contributing towards making this university a first-class university in this country and also it might be ranked as among the top universities of the world. That is not just the ambition of the university. That is not just the ambition of the country. It should also be your ambition as graduates from this university"
"Many people are very gullible in this country also. If somebody comes along to them and say "We can change a ten-dollar note into a-hundred-dollar note, they are quite willing to invest in such a thing." And how many of them, highly educated people who have been cheated because they were greedy, they wanted to make something out of nothing. When you work, always remember that for whatever you earn, you must deliver, in terms of your service, in terms of your ideas, in terms of your management, in terms of contributing towards the success of whatever organization that you are working with. That should be your creed, your character. So that you will never be accused of cheating people. And then people will say, "Well, he is from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. That shouldn't be." So while you have acquired in this university great knowledge which will help you in your life, help you to earn a better living, you should always remember that you have a name to guard. The name of the university must remain clean all the time. Indeed it must remain a great name so that people will look up to this university and people will scramble to get into this university. Because if they get their children into this university, then of course they are going to benefit, and benefit fully."
Our First Experience
We raised our hands together supplicating before Allah swt, seeking His Blessings; asking Him for His forgiveness; begging before Him for giving us good health and safe journey. Muhammad Aiman was trying to hold his tears; the feeling of sadness clouded our mind and heart. This was quite tough decision that we had agreed on. Yes, our trip to Malaysia on 15 August 2009 was the first time for us (Nana & I) after 19 years of marriage and as one family, leaving my five kids alone abroad. ‘Afi, Muhammad Afiq and Muhammad Asri though are adults now and reliable enough to look after the household chores, etc. Again, being our first time was actually the challenge to break away from the pampered zone.
The first time leaving our kids alone was on the other hand, the second time that we (Nana and I) travelled together. The first time was our honeymoon trip in 1990.
Sharp at 18:00 hrs, we went out from our apartment to El Nouzha airport, Alexandria, accompanied by Muhammad Afiq and Afiqah. 15 minutes later, we arrived at the airport. The Meet and Assist staff from the Astra Travel was not within our eyes sight, but Alhamdullillah (praise only for Allah), we managed crossing the first screening smoothly. There was not much hustle at the check-in counter mainly for two reasons, that is, we had done our check-in online 36 hours before the departure, and we were among the first few passengers who arrived early. Subsequently, we crossed the immigration counter slickly and had our cappuccino at the lounge.
At around 19:20 hrs, announcement was made on the arrival of the Qatar Airways QR 512 from Doha. Alhamdulillah, scared to be called by the Qatar Airways ground staff for boarding, I joined the Maghrib-‘Isya congregation performed at the open area of the departure hall. This is one of the good things staying in Egypt; Mosques are everywhere and the prayer time comes, most of the people will oblige and perform the prayer together. However, we felt something was not right when the time ticked at 20:10 hours and we were still not invited to board the plane. Hence, the grief started.
Announcement on the delay was made 10 minutes later after the scheduled time – 20:25 hours. There was no information on why the delay and when would be the boarding time. The uncertainties created speculations, thus to some extend frustration and disappointment. The staffs seem to be very busy; I believed trying to solve the matters, but little time was spared to their customers – the frustrated customers. Perhaps what they should have done was distributing drinks to ‘cool’ them off or approach the confused passengers, who had paid significant amount of money, with appropriate information. This is what I called Crisis Management or People Management. I have tried to seek their attention on our connecting flight to KL from Doha, but to not my satisfaction.
Eventually, announcement was made around 22:20 hours for all the passengers to board the plane. Many were excited though with some disappointments. All the Economy Class passengers had went inside the busses, which supposed to transport us to the Airbus 320. We went to another bus for the First Class passengers. Amid the hot ambience and the unpleasant smell of the smoke emitted by busses, we were idled and stranded inside the bus for about 15 minutes! We were unofficially informed that, the aviation crew had solved the initial problem, but another persisted. With courtesy, we were asked to disembark the buses, I think for two reasons: one they were still not certain when the problem would be resolved and two, they need the busses to transport the Egypt Air Passengers to board the plane at 22:40 hours.
The three and half hours delay had taught us the real meaning of patience, tolerance and emotion intelligence. The great Messenger of Allah swt has taught and reminded us many time about self-control, managing of the inner self, understanding of people characters and the sacrifice. He, after successfully won the battle of Badr during the holy month Ramadan, reminded his companions that this was just small battle (despite the tough obstacles that they went through), but the real big battle is to fight against self-desire. We plan Allah disposes. I believed, the Almighty Allah azza wa jala wanted us to learn something out of it – patience. He says in the holy Qur’an; ‘Allah is with those who are patience’. We met many nice friendly people of different characters who were actually reminded us about our own characters that need to be improved. We talked about sweet and sour past stories that we maneuvered together. The characters that we saw reminded me about each single character of our five beautiful great assets – our kids. Each one of them have their own strength and hence, my responsibilities to collate the strength to form a good team. They are great kids!
Finally, we boarded the aircraft at 23:25 hours and took off at around 23:55 hours

Egyptian Way of Eating Mango
Mango is one of the Egyptian local produce abundantly available during summer. One must try ‘aser mangga’ or literally means Mango juice from any fruit juice shops. The rich pure Mango juice is a must-drink juice for anyone who visits the exotic Egypt during summer. And, the price is ridiculously cheap - USD 1 for 3 big glasses.
The first time I tried the Egyptian Mango was in August 2006, during the ELNG luncheon with the VP Gas Datuk Wan Dzul and Datuk Rahim. I sat next to the ELNG Security Manager Abd Moneim. After the main course, he offered me a medium size Mango! Not to embarrass him, I took it hesitantly and at the same time, naively, I asked him for a piece of knife to skin-off the Mango. He responded cynically, but sincerely offered me a brief lesson on how to eat the Mango in the Egyptian way.
First, wash the Mango thoroughly or use a piece of tissue paper to wipe-off any sand or debris on the Mango skin.
By using a medium size table knife, cut the middle portion of the Mango to divide it into two portions. It is sunnah to apply the table knife towards you.
Hold tight the top part; turn it to the left and right briefly, then split into two parts, one side with the seed on it and the other part is ready to for your consumption.
First, wash the Mango thoroughly or use a piece of tissue paper to wipe-off any sand or debris on the Mango skin.

A one Way Trip
Our prayers and thoughts are always with you and may Allah swt place your soul together with the pious people.Ameen.
We Were Here : 1989-2001
I was here since April 1989 until April 2001. Nana joined me a year later, followed by ‘Afi in 1991. We had been in Bintulu for about 12 years, watching not only the people but also the town, its infrastructure, and the socio economy growing dramatically in parallel with the oil & gas industries.
This summer, we spent a day trip to Bintulu visiting our friends and witnessing its latest development phase. It now, has new hotel, apartments, new townships, new airport, new highways, and improved infrastructure.
However, the As-Shakirin Mosque or Masjid As Shakirin literally means Mosque of Gratefulness to Allah swt, is always in my heart. It is one of the Bintulu prominent landmarks, which has contemporary unique architecture, designed by Hijjas Kasturi Associates - www.hijjaskasturi.com.my one of the most prominent Malaysian architect. The Open concept and its intrinsic spiritual values give you calmness and soothing experience.
The As-Shakirin reminded me about Terawih prayer during the holy month of Ramadhan in Bintulu. It was well organized, participated by hundreds of people around Bintulu including Abd Hakeem and I.
Bintulu General Hospital (BGH) – this is where Afiqah born 8 years 7 months ago at around 4:30 am, Tuesday morning. At that particular moment, I was at home looking after the four boys – ‘Afi, Muhammad Afiq, Muhammad Asri, and Muhammad Aiman. After performing the Fajr prayer, and preparing the three boys to school, Nana, who was alone at the hospital called me informing about the safe arrival of Afiqah. Only Allah swt knows how excited I was then. Eight and the half years had past though, but the hospitality of the BGH staff especially at the children ward, will always be in our memory.
Asean Bintulu Fertiliser or in short ABF is where I first entered the PETRONAS world in April 1989, about 5 years after it had been in operation. The first five years was not easy for all of us, especially us in the urea operations. We were considered fortunate if we managed keeping the plant running more than a month. ‘Fighting fires’ everyday during the 8 hours shift was really exhausted, frustrated and demoralized. Providentially fortunate, we had a good team players, supportive management, and lucrative package that had kept us alive and kicking. Sometime, we played MacGyver act to keep the plant kicking as well! Nevertheless, this was the place had taught, groomed, and developed me to what am I today.
