Day 3 : A Bright Cheerful White Desert Morning

|

The sun submissively rose from the desert horizon cheered us up to start the day with positive mental endurance, enhanced spiritual strength - one hope, one team, and one goal.
Our campsite in front of the panoramic view of the White Desert structures. During this second, our kids were still sleeping while the tour guides were preparing us breakfast. We really had a good breakfast – brownish ayish, honey, cheese, butter and fruit jams, under the open blue sky.
Sometime, we have to self-reflex and look back, the year that was…………. the past……………………………….for better tomorrow.
Along the way back, we stopped at the El Heiss Oasis to experience the hot spring. Unfortunately, the pump was not functioning and hence, we moved to another spot 7.5 km away for another spring – the cold spring. The water was very refreshing and tempting us. However, at the interest of time, we decided to move on.
Our lifetime experience, camping in the White Desert, maneuvering the rugged terrain of the black dessert, dunes and eerie Bahariya-Farafra highway, had one way or another, taught us among others, the real sense or perseverance, patience, and endurance. I would like to record my sincere heartfelt thanks to Yusmadi, Muhammad Rosdi and their families for the great time and most of all, the camaraderie that they had demonstrated over the past 3 days and 2 nights in the middle of Egypt.

Captured Live : Paint Store on Fire

|

4 months ago, within at the same spot, we watched live a public bus on fire . Today, at around 6:41 am in the morning while we were on the way to the Bahariya Oasis, we watched a thick black smoke clouded the blue skyline of Amriya. We thought it was from some irresponsible joker who purposely disposed their waste, whatsoever by this uncivilized way.
We were wrong. As we were approaching closer to the scene, it was actually a building razed by the hungry fire. I jumped out from our car and brought my lethal weapon – the D90 to capture the live scene. In the scene, there were few people standing and watching in despair, the building diminished burnt down by the wild angry blaze. No fire engine was at the site or probably still on the way! I was informed that the building was a paint store or shop.

Our Little Adorable guest

|

'Afu simply or literally means forgiving, was one of our honorable guest during the Eid. He is just two months old, adorable, and obedient; baby son of Nana’s ‘adopted’ couple - Nurah and Mostafa. Both of them had completed their studies at Al-Azhar University and preparing to depart their home at Yala, Thailand.
What I respect and salute about this couple is their attitude and passion about their studies and life. Believed me, it is not easy to maneuver a married - family life while study, and with lack of financial support. In pursuing their studies, they were supported by their underprivileged family back home in Southern part of Thailand and Nurah received few hundreds USD per year from the Kuwait Government, to keep them motivated. Henceforth, in their endeavor to sustain good life, with little entrepreneurship skills, but hardworking; they managed to earn their living so as to survive this lethal environment by selling many things that one could possibly sell.
Alhamdullillah, with the Blessing, Grace and Mercy from Allah azza wa jalla, they were bestowed with a healthy baby – ‘Afu and had successfully completed their degree program from one of the oldest universities in the world. InsyaAllah, they will fly back home this November. To both from all of us, Congratulations on your graduation and all the best for the next part of your journey and may Allah swt be with you always. Till we meet again, and please accept our apologies for our shortcomings.

Eid Mubarak : Selamat Hari Raya Aidil Fitri

|

Ketupat or compacted or compressed rice cake traditionally cooked inside weaved palm leaves is synonym with the celebration of the breakfasting or Eidul Fitri amongst the Malay. Thus, wherever you find any Malay in this world, you will find this essential special rice cake during both Eids – Eidul Fitri and Eidul Adha. However, in this modern world equipped with high-end cutting-edge technology, one could find the instant ketupat is easily available in any groceries shops.
A partner of ketupat is rendang. As the famous saying says; ‘it takes two to Tango’, ketupat without rendang is just like a song without lyric. Rendang is made from beef or occasionally chicken or mutton slowly cooked in coconut milk and spices (may include ginger, galangal, turmeric leaf, lemon grass and chilies) for several hours until almost all the liquid is evaporated, allowing the meat to absorb the spicy condiments. The cooking process changes from boiling to frying as the liquid evaporates, thus allows the meat to become tender.
This year, we – few Malaysian Medic students and Al-Azhar students had our Eidul Fitri gathering at Ahmad Shariffudin’s residence. Nana prepared the chicken rendang, Red Chili chicken stew, ketupat, while her friend Dorin, prepared few traditional Malay cakes, spicy peanut gravy or sauce, and drinks. For all of us, celebrating the Eid in Alexandria was our first ever experience. And for me and family, probably the first and the last.
Perlahan-perlahan melayar bahtera...nanti hanyut di lambung ombak
Bersedahana menyambut Raya…takut poket koyak rabak.

Diperintah sudah oleh Yang Maha Berkuasa
Sesudah berpuasa kita beraya
Walaupun setahun sekali sahaja
Jangan sampai kita lupa dunia

Bila dekat selalu mengata
Namun bukan kerana Benci
Andai ada tersilap kata
Ampunkan dosa kami yang lemah lagi dhaif ini

Terasa sedih lagi hiba
Menyambut Raya Aidil Fitri
Walaupun jauh dari penglihatan mata
Namun sentiasa dekat di mata hati

Jari disusun maaf pohon direstui
Semoga hidup lebih dirahmati
Email sebagai peganti diri
Dengan ucapan selamat hari raya aidilifitri

The Eve of Eidul Fitr at Alexandria

|

till We meet again......Ramadan

|

The twilight of Ramadan set itself handing over its duty to the crescent of Syawal, which signifies the Eidul Fitri – the festive celebration of breakfasting. After almost one month of refraining themselves from eating, drinking, and other intimate activities during the day, Muslims around the globe, besides celebrating their success, supplicating before Allah swt for His acceptance of their repentant and good deeds, asking for His Grace and Mercy. Amiin.
Kullu sana wa ente tayeeb : Kol ‘Am wa antum bi Khair : Selamat Hari Raya : Eid Mubarak : Bayramınız Mübarek Olsun : Barka De Sallah
Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar
الله أكبر الله أكبر الله أكبر
laa ilaaha illAllaah
لا إله إلا الله
Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar
الله أكبر الله أكبر
wa li-illaahil-hamd
ولله الحمد
God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest,
There is no deity but God
God is the Greatest, God is the Greatest
and to God goes all praise

New Student Attaché

|

Today, the new Malaysian Student Attaché, Siti Nur Zakiah invited us to have Iftar at her apartment. She replaces the former Habibah who went back 2 months ago. Siti Nur Zakiah accompanied by her husband and three children arrived at Alexandria and took her new office since almost two weeks ago.
During the Iftar, we had opportunities meeting with few Malaysian Embassy staff & spouses, MARA Director - Tuan Hj Ishak, and student representatives from various faculties.
To Siti Nur Zakiah, nice meeting you and enjoy your stay here in Alexandria.

Iftar around Mandarah

|

There are slightly more than 4 millions (based on 2008 census) people living in Alexandria and Mandharah is one the most densely populated places. In general, the Egyptians prefer having their Iftar or breakfasting with the family in restaurants, friends’ house, and/or hotels. Two days ago, my good friend Ayman invited me to his Iftar at Al-Balbab, one of the top seafood restaurants in Alexandria. His owner, Ashraf, a very pleasant and down-to-earth type, is a multimillionaire now, and he has another branch at downtown. I managed capturing few shots of this scene at Mandharah. I would not deny the fact and intention of having the iftar in this mode though, but most of the occasions that I have seen, people copiously abundant the foods as if there is no more tomorrow! And, what sadden me, 40% of its population is solemnly poor inhabitant, who hardly consumed third-class ‘Aiyesh or bread.

Ramadan the Intercontinental Way

|

Alex Raya Mood

|

One of the ways to kill time during the Ramadan month in Egypt is producing the Alex salty pineapple tart. In the mood of celebrating Eidul Fitri, Nana and her good friend Dorin recently, had successfully produced hundreds of pineapple tarts the Alexandria way.

Asian Cuisine at Maadi

|

After our Q3 meeting we had our iftar dinner at the Asian Corner, Maadi Cairo. Located at the back lane of our headquarters, within Digla, Maadi, I think the Aisan Corner is the only restaurant in Maadi that serves Asian – Malaysia, India, & Thailand cuisine. The price is reasonable; the service is not that bad, and above all, the foods are commendable.
Thanks to Muhammad Rosdi for sponsoring the Iftar at his house before we adjourned to the Asian Corner.
Except Ahmad Sharifuddin and Kamarul, all of family members and us were having good meals and fun. We had nasi goreng, Indian chicken curry, sets of sushi, Thailand shrimps, etc. The dinner coincided with Zoffi’s (Yusmadi’s son) birthday and thus, a short intermission of his birthday celebration.

Company Iftar 2009

|

Once again, ELNG as a caring company organized the yearly company Iftar at San Stefano Four Seasons Hotel at Alexandria. This year we were accompanied by Yusmadi and Muhammad Rosdis’ family members that cheered up the day. One thing different this year was, the organizer prepared proper rooms for us to perform congregationally Maghrib, ‘Isya and Terawih prayer.
The Iftar was probably our last Iftar with the Company. To my fellow Egyptians we hope, we shall meet again and cross path somewhere and time, insyaAllah – God Willing.
Definitely, we are going to miss the Beshamel, Tarjin, Molekheya, Roz bilLaban, Umm ‘Ali, falafel, khunafah, tahina, and the list continues...... masalamah. Kullu Sana Wa antum Tayibiin.

Football Ramadan Special! The Egyptian way

|

I am not that craze about football, but I like watching the game on TV if there are good reputable teams like Manchester United, Barcelona, Liverpool, Argentina, etc. are in the field kicking and entertaining. The last time I think, I played football was with my shift mates ten years back, since then, I never ‘kick’ any football, except having fun with kids.
Well, if I want to revive my best kicking skill again, I will surely do it appropriately – with the right attire, proper warm-up, at the right field, within the right timing and season (I mean for instance not during rainy season). Playing football during the month of Ramadan, where most of the people taking the time to self reflecting their past performance, enhancing their faith, patronizing the Mosques performing Solat Terawih, is something that I would never think of and not even in my last less important priorities list.
In Egypt, however, the night in the holy month of Ramadan is full of happening and hype. It is quite a typical scene where the people filling up the night with football, cultural stuff, family outing or gathering along the corniche or gardens and shopping. Sad to mention though, relatively few are in the Mosques.
Not be left behind, apart from ping-pong and other stuff, our Company organized a football competition, which they called it Ramadan Sport Activities special! Believe me, a football competition in Ramadan! You will be isolated if you do it in Malaysia.
Like it or not, as part of the Shareholders representative, I had politically obliged the invitation by the organizing committee to witness the opening and the final match. The managers were invited to play in the friendly match to close up the curtain.

The 15th Moon : It is still Not Too Late...

|

The photo of the 15th – full moon of Ramadan taken by ‘Afi using Nikon D90: F/9; ISO 640; exposure time ¼ sec. and focal length of 105 mm. The moon tells us that 14 days had passed us by. That means, 15 days to go before we would conclude this holy month of Islam. However, what does matter is how much we have gained out of this yearly opportunity. I think it is still not too late for us to reflex and revive back our energy physically also spiritually to catch up with more opportunities promised by Allah azza wajalla especially during the last 10 days of Ramadan, as shown by His Messenger, Prophet Muhammad saw (peace be upon him)

The Future Leaders.....InsyaAllah

|

There are adorable, gorgeous, and charming. Muhammad Aiman, Zorrif Yusmadi, Marsha Yusmadi, and Afiqah with their lovely attitude. May Allah swt bless them all and give them Baraqah & Rahmah in becoming future leaders.

Nana & the Al Azhar Students

|

Nana with the Al-Azhar University students enjoying the evening walk around Kafr Abdou heading towards Kamarul’s house for our Iftar. Some of the students had completed their studies and ready to face the new chapter of their life, while some are still in the early stage. Well, to them Nana is their friend, advisor and dearly sister.

Energy Receive Energy Return

|

Oil and Gas is its main core business. Since 17 August 1974, its existence has significantly contributed to Malaysia’s development in many aspects – education, infrastructure, socio-economy, human development, SMI, and tourism. This national oil company called PETRONAS has helped Malaysia in managing the black gold industry from being siphoned, monopolized, and dominated by other foreign organization. And, their record thus far had been distinctly exceeding requirement. These are the ‘energy’ that we received and as mandated by the Almighty, the ‘energy’ should be shared and returned to all that deserve – the stakeholders.
In line with that principle, on 1 September 2009, we a small PETRONAS community based in Egypt succesfully organized an iftar or breakfasting for the Malaysian Al-Azhar University (Alexandria branch) and Alexandria Medical University students who are going to celebrate the coming Eidul Fitri away from their families, relatives and friends in Malaysia.
Financed by the PETRONAS International Company Limited (Egypt), we managed to have a good Yahalla Beriyani khoruf downy and chicken; Satay from ‘Rumah Kedah’; Chicken curry by Kamarul; Salad by Saiful; other dishes, cakes and desserts by Faizal. We also would like to record our sincere heartfelt thanks to Kamarul for voluntarily accommodating and allowing us to use his apartment for the auspicious feast.

Ta'lim - Part IX

|

Hadrat Bilal ra is one of the best known o the galaxy of Sahabah as muadzzin of the Prophet’s saw (peace be upon him) Masjid. He was an Abysinian slave of a disbeliever in Mecca. His conversion to Islam was, naturally, not liked by his master and he was, therefore, persecuted mercilessly. Ummayah bin Khalaf, who was the worst enemy of Islam, would make him lie down on burning sand at midday and would place a heavy stone on his breast, so that he could not even move a limb. He would then say to him:
“Renounce Islam or swelter and die.”
Even under these afflictions, Bilal ra would exclaim:-
“Ahad” – The One (Allah), “Ahad” – The One (Allah).
He was whipped at night and with the cuts thus received, made to lie on the burning ground during the day to make him either forsake Islam or to die a lingering death from wounds. He tortures would get tired and taje turns (Abu Jahl, Umayyah and others) and vie with one another in afflicting more and more painful punishment, but Hadrat Bilal ra would not yield. At last Abu Bakr ra bought his freedom, and he became a free Muslim.
As Islam taught implicitly the oneness of the Almighty Creator, while the idolators of Mecca believed in many gods and goddesses with minor godlings, therefore Bila ra repeated:
“Ahad (The One), Ahad (The One)
This shows his love and devotion to Allah. Allah swt was so dear to him that no amount of persecution could distract him from reciting His Holy name. It is said that the urchins o Mecca would drag him in the streets, with his words “Ahad!,Ahad!” ringing in their wake.
Look how Allah swt rewarded his steadfastness! He was to have the honour of becoming the Prophet’s muadzzin. He was always to remain with him at home and abroad to call out the Azaan for his Solaat. Ater the Prophet’s death it became very hard for him to continue his stay in Madinah where hw would miss him at every step and in every corner. He therefore left Madinah, and decided to pass the rest of his life striving in the path of Allah. Once he beheld the Prophet saw (peace be upon him) in his dream saying to him:
“O, Bilal! How is it that you never visit me.”No sooner did he get up than he set out of Madinah. On reaching there, Hadrat Hassan ra and Hadhrat Husain ra requested him to call out the Azaan. He could not refuse them, for they were very dear to him. But as soon as Azaan was clled, the people of Madinah cried openly out of their anguish at the memory of haapy old days of the Prophet’s saw time. Even the women came out o their houses weeping. Hadhrat Bilal ra left Madinah again after few days and died in Damascus in 20 AH.

Iftar Invitation : Yehia

|

Adnan, Kamarul, ‘Afi and Muhammad Afiq had ‘beaten’ the other Egyptians friend during the Iftar. Fortunately, we had performed our Maghrib prayer.
Rasullullah saw (peace be upon him) said; ‘Those who serve or prepare food for someone who is fasting for his iftar will get the same tsawab of the person who was fasting’.
May Allah swt give His Blessing to Yehia and his family for preparing the scrumptious dishes – roasted turkey; Masaa’ – eggplant cooked with beef, tomato and other spicy stuff; fateer lahmah or beef puff; dessert – khunafa bi Mangga and other Egyptians cuisine. It was indeed marvelous.
